A nanny is not difficult to find - to find a really GOOD nanny is a specialist skill and can take a little longer! Please refer to our Interview Questions.

The essence of finding and keeping a really good nanny is good communication with her. If a nanny is valued and included as part of the family, then peace should reign! Here are a few ideas for keeping your nanny happy...

1. A nanny likes to be appreciated - thank her for things she does for you.

2. Introduce her to nannies in your area.

3. Encourage her to let you know when she needs to discuss matters with you.

4. Be available to hear her news.

5. Agree on "day one" the duties and hours that are required.

6. Make sure that the nanny has all the important telephone numbers to hand:

Your work number
Family Doctor
Family Dentist
Hospital
Health visitor
Child's school and name of teacher
Police station

7. Agree how much money should be in a "kitty" for treats (sweets, ice-creams, etc)

8. If you will be late home, give your nanny as much warning as possible.

9. Agree who is responsible for exercising any pets.

10. Explain about locks, alarms and household appliances.

11. Show her where the First Aid box is and make sure that she knows what to do in an emergency. If she is not trained in First Aid, suggest she enrols on a course, as soon as possible.

12. Write down the children's routine for her.

13. Explain about any favourite foods your children have.

14. Explain allergies within the family.

15. Establish whether the nanny is allowed to use the telephone, and discuss who will pay for any personal calls she makes.

16. Suggest to your nanny that she keep a diary of things she has done with your children during the day (food eaten, places visited, developmental milestones achieved, etc).

17. Ensure that you agree what form of discipline is acceptable.

18. Draw up a contract to clarify duties / hours / holidays / sickness arrangements, etc.

19. Discuss financial arrangements for the use of a nanny car or the nanny's own car.

20. Pay your nanny on time!
